In 1883, abolitionist and women rights advocate, Sojourner Truth, distributed photographic images to raise funds for her public speeches, a common practice for many activists. Harper Bazaar, a widely popular magazine in the 19th century, began to take on a political stance by addressing slavery and women's' suffrage. Value Of Art Often I forget about the vast amount of museums and sites that are accessible to a person no matter where they are in the world. The virtual trip through Guggenheim's photographic images of the Stone Wall riots, the Berkeyly Riots, and events such as the African apartheid was a sobering reminder of how important a single image can be to the world. Many of the images show the struggle for civil rights across the globe. Often I worry that art, digital, graphic, or photography is often dismissed by our society as a hobby with little discussion on how it can influence, or reflect history. Is it possible that we can change this common misconception that art, in truth, is not a disposable medium for a hobbyist, but a powerful and invaluable tool that defines our society?
